Thought #348: Why We Ignore Rules When Laws Miss Reality

Anyone raised to believe Germany is a constitutional state with an intrinsic respect for rules sees a worrying shift today. For a long time, we followed rules not out of coercion, but out of understanding that community relies on them. Yet outdated laws—some originating in the Imperial era—increasingly miss modern reality. When cities passively tolerate illegal parking at intersections because clogged streets overwhelm enforcement, the rule of law capitulates to its own overload. Solo entrepreneurs and new projects face a similar struggle, like a coworking space in Lindenau: rigid imprint laws force founders to rent expensive business addresses or bypass disclosing private addresses in gray areas. When demands become impractical or unaffordable, society’s consensus to follow rules crumbles.
