The climax of George Orwell’s 1984 is burned into my memory: Room 101, where Winston is broken until he agrees to see five fingers instead of four. At its core, totalitarian control is about forcing the individual to deny reality and repeat a lie.
Yet, humans carry a deeply rooted internal navigation system—a moral compass refined over 250,000 years of evolution, long before states, bureaucracies, or constitutions existed. This internal sensor reliably alerts us when something is fundamentally wrong: when we encounter corruption, coercion, deceit, or arbitrary power.
