Nicola Sturgeon stands out to me as one of the most forward-thinking political leaders, because she was among the first to officially move away from GDP as the core metric of progress. She made it clear that we can no longer rely on Gross Domestic Product to tell us how well a society is doing.
Instead, she championed a Wellbeing Index focused on actual quality of life: mental health, fair work, child development, and carbon-zero transitions.
What GDP completely ignores is short-term financial exploitation that destroys social cohesion and the planet. We need to stop measuring societal success purely through money.
