Thought #373: Melting Glaciers and the Neoliberal Paradox

A morning news report details the dramatic glacier retreat in the Alps: driven by global warming and greenhouse gas emissions over the last 30 years, glaciers lose a massive portion of their mass every year. The scientist puts it bluntly: the genie is out of the bottle—the melting can no longer be stopped, only mitigated. And what does the working middle class do right after watching this report? They commute to work to produce more, consume more, and boost GDP—fueling the exact emissions that destroy their children's future. It's a massive, absurd contradiction: we slave away in bullshit jobs for a system that repays our relentless effort with old-age poverty and welfare cuts, all while burning down our own habitat.
