Despite my dislike for country-western music, my father once asked me to listen to a specific track by the German band Truck Stop: "Just listen to the story in the lyrics and tell me what you think." The lead singer spoke more than he sang, telling the story of a young boy using a wheelchair after an accident.
Isolated at home, the boy used CB radio during his free time to talk to long-haul truckers. He shared his story and his simple dream: just once, to sit inside a big rig and ride along. Moved by his words, a trucker put out a call over the airwaves. Dozens of drivers showed up, taking turns taking the boy out on the road. That was nearly fifty years ago. It’s the only song by that band I still remember today—not for the melody, but for its timeless message of empathy and human solidarity.
