Many people feel that our current economic system is reaching its limits. Across the globe, changemakers are seeking paths toward a fairer, more sustainable future. Yet, a massive gap remains between the insightful books on our shelves and the reality of our daily lives.

To understand why progress is stalling, we need to look at the three levels where this dynamic unfolds:

1. The Three Levels: Where We Stand Today

  • The Thinkers (Science & Theory): Scholars like economists Timothée Parrique, Jason Hickel, and Maja Göpel clearly articulate why the old growth-driven model is broken. Parrique demonstrates two key truths: "green growth" is an illusion—we have already breached 7 out of 9 planetary boundaries—and further economic growth in wealthy nations neither increases happiness nor eradicates poverty. The Problem: Brilliant theory alone doesn't pay your rent or put food on the table.
  • The Networkers (Platforms & Coalitions): Organizations like Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie or the Wechange cooperative build vital infrastructure for educational work, dialogue, and digital collaboration for tens of thousands of activists. The Problem: Standard office software and video conferencing tools merely manage schedules and files. They don't help people pool money, share resources, or practice genuine solidarity in real life.
  • The Doers (Everyday Practice): Pioneers like Helena Frieda Wolf test alternatives like the Gemeinsame Ökonomie (Common Economy / GemÖk) directly on the ground—sharing housing, tools, money, and responsibility. The Problem: Without accessible, pre-built tools, practitioners must reinvent the wheel. Many burn out, and great ideas remain trapped in tiny niches.
